Internally Displaced Persons

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are people who are forced to flee their homes but remain within their country's borders. They are often referred to as refugees, but they do not fall under the definition of a refugee. They stay in their own country but are hardly better off than those who have managed to cross the border. Since December 31st, 2002, 62,308 families have been displaced, or 396,808 individuals (as of May, 2012. Numbers have been going up since then).  IDPs are among the world’s most vulnerable people, staying inside their country while others have fled because of armed conflict and violence. IDPs are legally under protection of their own government, but the government is usually the cause of the danger in the first place.
